I am a Warrior!

Yesterday, my friends Amy, Eric and I did the Warrior Dash in Mountain City, Georgia. I really didn’t know what to expect from it. The website made it sounds scary and hard but when I looked at Youtube videos, I began to think that it wasn’t really that challenging. Still, I didn’t know what it would be like.

The way the race was set up is that there were different heats and each heat started in half hour intervals. We were in the 3pm heat. I drove to Amy and Eric’s house around noon and we set off for the two hour drive. Mountain City was in the middle of nowhere, but it was really pretty.

A shuttle took us from the parking lot to the event and we quickly met up with Mark, who was hanging out and spectating. We got our numbers, randomly found some face paint to make ourselves warrioresque and lined up at the start.

I purchased a waterproof disposable camera to take pictures during the race. I don’t have any good pictures of the first few obstacles. First we went through some water, then we climbed through junky cars and then we did one where we jumped over 4-ft high walls and under barbed wire four times. This was actually sort of hard because it was really muddy and your feet would get stuck in the mud as you tried to pull yourself over the walls.

Then came the fourth obstacle and it was the one that I was dreading: The Great Warrior Wall.

I was actually more worried that I wouldn’t have the arm strength to pull myself up. Turns out, that wasn’t a problem at all. What was a problem, however, was the height of the wall. I’d say it was about 12 feet high and as I climbed up, all I could imagine was losing my grip on the rope and falling backwards.

I think I stood at the top for a good five minutes before getting up enough courage to hoist myself over. But I managed! And didn’t kill myself in the process.

After the wall, the rest of the obstacles seemed pretty easy. At this point, the course was so muddy that you pretty much had to walk.

The last obstacle before the finish line was fire jumping. I swear the fires looked higher in real life.

Amy and Eric had finished ahead of me so they met me at the finish line and we went to donate our shoes to the big shoe pile.

We are warriors!

This was seriously so much fun. I’d recommend everyone do it if it interests you. Contrary to what the website says, it’s not particularly hard nor do you have to be in great physical shape. It’s just fun!

(Thanks for the pictures, Mark)

    • It’s nowhere near as scary as the Tough Mudder. This was relatively easy. They said it was 3 miles but I think it was more like 2.

  22. That is AWESOME!! Congrats, Warrior!! I so wanted to do that, but Twisted Ankle Half is the same weekend. I had one group of IRL friends that went and another “virtual” friend from Atlanta who went. All the reports have been similar to yours and so y’all have convinced me to try to find a WD soon. :)
