Not My Last

As I started to run on the treadmill tonight, I envisioned myself typing out this blog post. In my mind, I was going to say something about how running has been tough lately, but I finished strong my last week before the taper. But it wasn’t true.

Yesterday’s 3 mile run was good. I ran at lunch and when I run during lunch, I tend to run faster because I need to fit the entire workout in a 30 minute time frame. (The rest of the hour is used traveling to and from the gym and changing.) I ran a little faster than normal and felt good. Then today, I was supposed to run 6 miles. I ran 5. And they sucked. It was probably due to running faster the day before, but that 50 or so minutes could not come fast enough.

I didn’t get home until 8 and threw together a pretty simple dinner – Trader Joe’s Gnocci ala Sorenta (or something like that), Morningstar Farms Veggie Meatballs and some steamed kale.


On Twitter today, there were tons of tweets about the Marine Corps Marathon. I thought about how once in my life, I wanted to be one of those people who ran a marathon. And I did run one. But I didn’t catch that marathon bug that most people did. I had a bad race and honestly, never wanted to do it again.

That’s not how I feel about half-marathoning. As much as I’ve been complaining about being sick of running, I’m at the very end of my training. The race is an week and a half and hopefully the training will pay off. And while I do intend to take a break and focus more on shorter, faster runs, I don’t think this half-marathon will be my last.

  3. I’ve run one half marathon and afterwards my first thought was, “I’ll never do that again.” It’s been five years and I am just starting to come around and think maybe I’ll do it again. At this point I have no desire to do a full though. Too much time spent running for this chick.

  4. You picked an extreme course that had extreme weather conditions the day of the race. No wonder you’re not eager to relive that. I bet if you were willing to give it a second chance (on a better course, on a better day) you might catch the bug.

    Half marathons are no joke though. Definitely something to be respected! Good job pushing through your runs. Keep that 10K PR in mind if you have any doubts.

  5. I am glad that you are inspired to keep it up. I think we all hit burnout sometimes. And I think that itch to run a half here and there is a good itch to have. I get it now and again too, as you know 😉

  7. I don’t know if I’ll ever run a full marathon. I used to think I wanted to, but I actually love the half marathon distance. I’m hoping to run another one this year. Just waiting for the motivation to kick back in.

  8. Not everyone is a marathon kind of person, I think us marathoners are all a little crazy, but crazy in a good way. But you have to figure out what distance you enjoy, what inspires you, and do that! Nothing better or worse about any distance, they can all be TOUGH as heck. :)

  9. Yay- you can do it! You are well aware that the feeling of crossing the finish line always makes the training worth it.
    I really wanted to run a marathon (and still kind of do), but just have no desire right now. Really, I have no desire to train- it just takes up so much time, and I like diversity in my workouts. I figure that I still have a lifetime to cross a marathon off my bucket list. I’ve only ever done one half-marathon, and came in under 2 hours (which was my goal)- and I really loved the experience. But, that was back in ’08 and I just haven’t had the motivation to do another since then (or even a 5k lately).

  11. I’m sure you will rock your half next week. I think running is 80% mental so you just have to know you can do it, which is harder than you think.

    I kinda want to run a marathon just to say that I ran a marathon but at the same time, I’m pretty sure I’d die…

  14. I LOL’d at your answer for “P.” My mom puts an “s” after every store name making it possessive. “Banana Republic’s,” “Abercrombie’s,” “Anthropologie’s” and so on.
